Data Representation Methods in the Computer System

Grade

10

Term

1

Level 1: Foundation Builder (Aiming for a PASS / 'C' Grade)

  1. State: What two digits are used in the binary number system?

  2. Recall: What is the base of the Decimal number system?

  3. Identify: How many bits make one byte?

  4. List: Arrange these in order from smallest to largest: Gigabyte (GB), Kilobyte (KB), Megabyte (MB).

  5. Define: What is a 'bit'?

  6. Convert: What is the binary value for the decimal number 5₁₀?

  7. Identify: What does ASCII stand for?

Level 2: Concept Connector (Aiming for a 'B' Grade)

  1. Explain: In your own words, explain why computers use the binary system instead of the decimal system we use every day.

  2. Convert: Show the full method for converting the decimal number 45₁₀ into its binary equivalent.

  3. Convert: Show the method for converting the binary number 1101₂ into its decimal equivalent.

  4. Compare: What is the main advantage of the Unicode system over the older ASCII system, especially for users in Sri Lanka?

  5. Calculate: A song file is 3 MB. How many Kilobytes (KB) is this?

Level 3: 'A' Grade Challenge (Aiming for an 'A' Grade)

  1. Problem-Solving: You are downloading a 2 GB movie file using an internet connection with a download speed of 8 Megabits per second (Mbps).

  • First, convert the file size from Gigabytes (GB) to Megabits (Mb). (Remember: 1 Byte = 8 bits, 1 GB = 1024 MB).

  • Then, calculate how long it will take to download the movie in seconds.

  1. Justify: Programmers often use the Hexadecimal number system when working with computer memory or colors. Explain why this is more convenient than using long strings of binary numbers. Provide an example by converting the binary number 11110011₂ to Hexadecimal.

  2. Analyze: A student says, "My 64 GB pen drive can hold more data than my old 250 GB hard disk." This statement is incorrect. Explain the confusion between the units (GB and MB or other factors) that might have led the student to this conclusion and clarify the actual storage hierarchy.

Exam Tip for Chapter 3: For number conversion questions, always show your steps (the division or the place value calculation). You get marks for the correct method, even if you make a small calculation mistake at the end. Practice conversions until they become second nature!
