Electronic Spreadsheets

Grade

10

Term

3

Level 1: Foundation Builder (Aiming for a PASS / 'C' Grade)

(Focus: Can you remember the basic tools and definitions?)

  1. Identify: What symbol must every formula in a spreadsheet start with?

  2. Define: What is a 'cell'? How is it identified (e.g., A1)?

  3. List: Name the five basic mathematical operators used in formulas.

  4. Recall: What does the SUM function do?

  5. Identify: Which type of chart is best for showing parts of a whole, like how pocket money is spent?

  6. State: What is a 'cell range'? Give an example.

  7. Define: What is the 'fill handle' used for?

Level 2: Concept Connector (Aiming for a 'B' Grade)

(Focus: Can you apply formulas and explain concepts?)

  1. Explain: What is the main difference between a relative cell reference (e.g., A1) and an absolute cell reference (e.g., $A$1)? Describe a situation where you would need to use an absolute reference.

  2. Formula: You have numbers in cells A1, A2, and A3. Write the formula to calculate their average using a function.

  3. Calculate: What is the result of the formula = (10 + 2) * 2? Explain the order of operations.

  4. Justify: Your teacher asks you to create a chart showing the monthly rainfall in your town for a year. Would you use a Pie chart or a Line chart? Justify your choice.

  5. Differentiate: What is the difference between the COUNT function and the SUM function when used on a range of numbers?

Level 3: 'A' Grade Challenge (Aiming for an 'A' Grade)

(Focus: Can you design solutions to practical problems?)

  1. Design: You are creating a worksheet to calculate the final bill for a customer at a bookshop.

  • Cell A1 contains the number of books (e.g., 5).

  • Cell B1 contains the price per book (e.g., Rs. 400).

  • Cell C1 contains a discount percentage (e.g., 10%).

  • Write the single formula for cell D1 to calculate the final price after the discount is applied.

  1. Problem-Solving: Imagine you have a list of marks for 100 students in column B (from B2 to B101). A student gets a 'Distinction' if they score 75 or more.

  • Which function would be most suitable to count how many students received a distinction? (Hint: The function is COUNTIF. Look up how it works: COUNTIF(range, criteria)).

  • Write the exact formula you would use.

  1. Analyze: A worksheet has been created to track sales. In column A are product names, and in column B are the sales amounts. An employee has typed "Rs. 5,000" directly into a cell in column B. Why will this cause an error if you try to use the SUM function on column B? What is the correct way to enter and format this data?

Exam Tip for Chapter 7: In the exam, when asked to write a formula, always write the formula itself (e.g., =SUM(A1:A10)), not just the final number. The examiners want to see that you know how to use the spreadsheet's functions and references correctly.
