Level 1: Core Concepts (Aiming for a Pass / 'S' to 'C')

These prompts check your memory of the fundamental facts and definitions.

  1. Define: What is a 'pixel'?

  2. Identify: Which colour model is used for digital screens (like your phone or computer monitor): RGB or CMYK?

  3. Define: What is image 'resolution'?

  4. Recall: What is the main difference between a Raster graphic and a Vector graphic?

  5. Define: What does file 'compression' mean?

  6. Identify: Is the JPEG (.jpg) file format an example of Lossy or Lossless compression?

  7. Recall: In animation, what is a 'keyframe'?

Level 2: Application & Explanation (Aiming for 'C' to 'B')

These prompts ask you to explain concepts and apply them to simple scenarios.

  1. Explain: Why does a raster image (like a photograph) become blurry or "pixelated" when you increase its size, while a vector image does not?

  2. Compare: Explain the difference between Lossy and Lossless compression. When would it be better to use Lossless compression, even if the file size is larger?

  3. Describe: Explain the process of 'tweening' in animation and why it is useful for animators.

  4. Apply: You are editing a photograph in GIMP. Why is it a good idea to place different elements (like text and shapes) on separate 'layers'?

  5. Explain: What is the purpose of 'trimming' or 'cutting' clips when you are editing an audio or video file?

Level 3: Analysis & Design (Aiming for 'B' to 'A')

These prompts challenge you to design solutions and analyze problems, just like the high-mark questions on the exam.

  1. Design Choice: You have been asked to design a logo for your school's sports club. This logo will be used on small ID cards and also on very large banners.

  • a) Should you create the logo as a Raster or a Vector graphic?

  • b) Justify your choice, explaining the key advantage of your chosen type for this specific situation.

  1. Problem-Solving: You have a high-quality digital photograph that you need to upload to a website. The website has a strict file size limit.

  • a) Which compression type, Lossy or Lossless, would you use to save the image?

  • b) Explain why this is the best choice to meet the website's requirements.

  1. Analysis: An animator sets a keyframe at 1 second showing a ball at the top of the screen and a second keyframe at 3 seconds showing the ball at the bottom of the screen. If the animation's frame rate is 24 frames per second (fps), how many 'tween' frames will the computer software generate to create the smooth motion between these two keyframes? Explain your calculation.
