Prompt Pack

Logic Gates with Boolean Functions

Grade

10

Term

2

Level 1: Foundation Builder (Aiming for a PASS / 'C' Grade)

  1. Identify: Name the three basic logic gates.

  2. Draw: Draw the symbol for a 2-input AND gate.

  3. State: What is the output of an OR gate if its inputs are 0 and 1?

  4. Define: What does a NOT gate do to its input?

  5. Truth Table: Complete the truth table for a 2-input AND gate.

  6. Identify: Which logic gate gives an output of 1 only when all its inputs are 1?

  7. Recall: What is the name for the opposite of an AND gate?

Level 2: Concept Connector (Aiming for a 'B' Grade)

  1. Explain: Describe the difference between a basic logic gate (like AND) and a combinational logic gate (like NAND).

  2. Truth Table: Create the full truth table for a 2-input NOR gate.

  3. Scenario: A house has a security light (Output) that should turn ON (1) if it detects motion (Input A = 1) OR if a manual switch is flipped ON (Input B = 1). Which logic gate best represents this situation? Explain your choice.

  4. Compare: Compare the outputs of a NAND gate and an AND gate for the same set of inputs (0,0), (0,1), (1,0), (1,1). What is the relationship between them?

  5. Boolean Expression: What is the Boolean expression for an OR gate with inputs A, B, and C?

Level 3: 'A' Grade Challenge (Aiming for an 'A' Grade)

  1. Design: A car has a warning buzzer that sounds (Output Q=1) if the car is started (Input A=1), the driver's seatbelt is NOT buckled (Input B=0), AND the driver's door is closed (Input C=1).

  • First, note that the condition "seatbelt is NOT buckled" requires a NOT gate for input B.

  • Draw the logic circuit diagram that represents this complete system.

  • Write the final Boolean expression for the output Q.

  1. Analyze: You are given the Boolean expression Q = (A.B) + C. Draw the logic circuit for this expression. How many logic gates are needed in total?

  2. Problem-Solving: Create the full truth table for the expression Q = A + (B.C). (This will have 3 inputs and 8 rows).

Exam Tip for Chapter 4: For design questions, break the problem down into English first (e.g., "This AND that need to happen"). Then, translate each part into the correct gate. Always double-check your truth tables – they are easy marks if you are careful.
