Works Effectively with Operating Systems

Grade

10

Term

2

Level 1: Foundation Builder (Aiming for a PASS / 'C' Grade)

  1. Define: What is an Operating System (OS)?

  2. List: Name the two main types of user interfaces.

  3. Identify: What is the main function of the 'File Management' part of an OS?

  4. State: Give one example of a 'utility program' that comes with an OS.

  5. Recall: What happens to your files when you 'format' a disk?

  6. Identify: What does a file extension like .jpg or .docx tell the OS?

  7. List: Name three common file operations (e.g., creating, deleting...).

Level 2: Concept Connector (Aiming for a 'B' Grade)

  1. Explain: Why is a Graphical User Interface (GUI) generally considered more user-friendly than a Command Line Interface (CLI)?

  2. Describe: What is 'multi-tasking' in an operating system? Give an example of you multi-tasking on a computer.

  3. Compare: What is the difference between disk partitioning and disk formatting? Why do you need to do both when setting up a new hard drive?

  4. Explain: What is a 'device driver' and why would you need to install one when you connect a new device like a printer?

  5. Justify: Explain why it is a good practice to organize your school project files into different folders on your computer.

Level 3: 'A' Grade Challenge (Aiming for an 'A' Grade)

  1. Analyze: A school computer lab has one powerful server and 20 client computers. What type of operating system (single-user or multi-user) should be installed on the server? Justify your answer by explaining how it would manage resources for all 20 students.

  2. Problem-Solving: A student complains their computer has become very slow at opening large files. The hard drive is not full. What OS utility could they run that might help speed up file access? Explain how this utility works and why it would help.

  3. Justify: Application software (like MS Word or a game) cannot be run on a computer without an operating system. Explain the role of the OS as a 'mediator' between the application software and the computer's hardware to justify this statement.

Exam Tip for Chapter 5: Relate OS functions to your own computer use. When you save a file, that's file management. When you play music while browsing the web, that's multi-tasking. Using these personal examples will make your answers stronger.
