Lesson Focus

This unit delves deeper into personality traits, human qualities, and values. It involves understanding different character types and expressing opinions in discussions and interviews.

Key Vocabulary to Master

  • Advanced Personality Traits: outgoing, reckless, wise, pleasant, gullible, sarcastic, ambitious, loyal, humorous, pessimistic, optimistic, punctual, self-centered.

  • Values: freedom, wealth, health, nature, success, knowledge, confidence, love.

Grammar Focuses

  1. Modals (ought to, need):

  • ought to: Used to give advice or say what is the right thing to do. (Similar to 'should').

    • Example: "We ought to try to change our negative aspects."

    • need to: Expresses necessity or something that is important to do.

      • Example: "You need to participate in these activities."

  1. Reciprocal Pronouns (each other, one another):

  • each other: Typically used for two people.

    • Example: "The two friends help each other."

    • one another: Typically used for more than two people.

      • Example: "The students in the class should cooperate with one another."

Important Points for the O/L Exam

  • Paper I (Writing): The vocabulary in this unit is perfect for writing character descriptions or for argumentative essays on topics like "What is most valuable in life?"

  • Oral Test: Being able to talk about your own personality, strengths, and weaknesses is crucial for the interview part of the oral exam.

  • Paper I (Grammar): Modals and pronouns are common topics in the grammar section. You may have to fill in the blanks with the correct word.

Tips & Tricks for Studying

  1. Self-Analysis: Write five sentences about your own personality using the vocabulary from this unit. Be honest! (e.g., "I am sometimes lazy, but I am also a loyal friend.")

  2. Advise a Friend: Imagine a friend has a problem (e.g., "I'm always late for school"). Write down three pieces of advice for them using "You ought to..." and "You need to...".

  3. Values Ranking: Look at the list of values (health, wealth, love, etc.). Rank them from most important to least important for you. Be ready to explain your top choice in one or two sentences.
