  • Sources: magazine, journal, encyclopedia, web page, library catalogue, browser, article.

  • Information Terms: contents page, chapter, author, characters, topic, entry, definition.

Grammar Focuses

  1. Present Perfect Tense (Passive): Used for a past action with a present result, focusing on the object.

  • Structure: has/have + been + past participle

  • Active: Online games have affected the studies of students.

  • Passive: The studies of students have been affected by online games.

  • Example: Students can go to the canteen only during the interval.

Important Points for the O/L Exam

  • Paper I (Writing): You could be asked to write a book review or a summary of an article. This unit provides the vocabulary for that.

  • Paper II (Reading): You will be tested on your ability to extract specific information from various texts. Understanding a contents page, an index, or a dictionary entry might be required.

  • Paper I (Grammar): The passive voice of the Present Perfect tense is a key area for grammar questions. Prepositions are always tested.

Tips & Tricks for Studying

  1. Summarize an Article: Find a short newspaper article. Read it and try to write a one-paragraph summary of the main points.

  2. Dictionary Skills: Pick five random words from your textbook. Look them up in a dictionary and write down their word class (noun, verb, etc.) and one definition.

  3. Passive Practice: Write five sentences about things that have happened in your school recently using the Present Perfect Passive (e.g., "The classroom has been cleaned," "The results have been released").
