Prompt Pack

Work, energy and power

Grade

10

Term

3

Level 1: Core Concepts Check (Aiming for a Pass - 'S')

  1. Define: What is work done?

  2. Define: What is energy?

  3. Define: What is power?

  4. List: What are the SI units for work, energy, and power?

  5. Identify: What is the energy of motion called?

  6. Identify: What is stored energy called?

  7. State the formula: Write the equation for work done.

  8. State the formula: Write the equation for kinetic energy.

  9. State the formula: Write the equation for gravitational potential energy.

Level 2: Connecting the Dots (Aiming for a Credit - 'C')

  1. Calculate: A crane lifts a 200 kg load up by 10 m. Calculate the work done by the crane. (g = 10 m/s²).

  2. Calculate: What is the kinetic energy of a 1000 kg car travelling at 20 m/s?

  3. Explain: A child at the top of a playground slide has 500 J of potential energy. Ignoring friction, what will their maximum kinetic energy be at the bottom? What principle does this illustrate?

  4. Compare: Two people run up a flight of stairs. They both have the same mass and climb the same height, but Person A gets to the top in 10 seconds while Person B takes 20 seconds. Who did more work? Who was more powerful? Explain.

  5. Apply: Explain why a car travelling at 100 km/h has much more kinetic energy than the same car travelling at 50 km/h.

Level 3: Exam Challenge (Aiming for a Distinction - 'A'/'B')

  1. Multi-step Problem: A water pump lifts 50 kg of water every second from a well to a storage tank that is 10 m above the well. (g = 10 m/s²). (a) Calculate the weight of the water lifted every second. (b) Calculate the work done by the pump every second. (c) What is the power of the pump in Watts? (d) If the pump is only 80% efficient, what is the actual power supplied to the pump's motor?
