  1. Explain the difference between a direct proportion and an inverse proportion.

  2. Which of the following scenarios is an example of an inverse proportion: (a) The distance a car travels at a constant speed and the time taken, or (b) The speed of a car and the time taken to travel a fixed distance?

  3. It takes 5 men 8 days to complete a task. How many "man-days" does the task require?

  4. Using the information from question 3, how many days would it take 10 men to complete the same task?

  5. It takes 8 men 9 days to complete a task. How many men would be required to complete the same task in 6 days?

  6. If the number of men required to complete a task is x and the number of days is y, write the algebraic relationship between x, y, and a constant k for an inverse proportion.

  7. A vehicle travelling at a uniform speed of 40 kmh⁻¹ completes a journey in half an hour. How long would the journey take if the speed was 50 kmh⁻¹?

  8. There is enough food in a hostel for 12 hostellers for 4 days. For how many days would this food be sufficient for 6 hostellers?

  9. In a farm, there is sufficient food for 12 cattle for 10 days. After two days, four more cattle were brought to the farm. For how many more days will the remaining food be sufficient for all the cattle?

  10. A task requires 40 man-days to complete. How many men are needed to complete the task in 2 days?

  11. Four men, working 6 hours a day for 3 days, completed 41​ of a task. What is the total magnitude of the task in "man-hours"?

  12. A group of men completed a task in 9 days. When 3 more men were added to the group, a similar task was completed in 6 days. How many men were in the initial group?

  13. A tank can be emptied in 4 hours using 3 identical pumps. If one pump stops working after 1 hour, how much longer will it take for the remaining two pumps to empty the tank?

  14. The length and breadth of a rectangle of constant area are in inverse proportion. If the area is 36 cm² and the length is 9 cm, what is the breadth?

  15. Using the information in question 14, if the length is changed to 12 cm, what will the new breadth be?
