Foundation Level (Fail → Pass)

  1. What is the difference between discrete data and continuous data? Give an example of each.

  2. For the class interval 20 - 30, what is the mid-value?

  3. What is the 'modal class' of a grouped frequency distribution?

  4. Explain the Direct Method formula for finding the mean: Mean = Σfx / Σf. What do f, x, fx, and Σ represent?

  5. Set up the first three columns (Class Interval, f, x) of a frequency table for a given set of data.


Intermediate Level (Pass → Credit) 

6. Create a study guide comparing the Direct Method and the Assumed Mean Method for finding the mean. Explain when it is better to use the Assumed Mean method.

7. Given a frequency table, calculate the mean using the Direct Method (Σfx / Σf).

8. Given a frequency table with large mid-values, calculate the mean to the nearest whole number using the Assumed Mean method.

9. In a class of 30 students, the mean mark for an assignment was 25. What was the total of all marks (Σfx)?

10. A survey of 100 viewers of a TV programme was done. The modal class for age was 35-45. What does this tell you about the viewers?


Advanced Level (Credit → Distinction) 

11. A frequency distribution of marks for 240 students is given. If the top 20% are awarded distinctions, above which mark would the selection be made?

12. The mean age of 100 teachers in a division is calculated to be 38.5 years. If a new teacher of age 25 joins, what will the new mean age be?

13. The monthly telephone bills for 70 customers are given in a frequency table. The mean bill is Rs. 750. If the company expects 1000 customers next year, what is the expected total income?

14. A frequency table shows the speed of 60 vehicles. If those exceeding 70 km/h are fined, what percentage of drivers are fined? Calculate the mean speed of a vehicle using an assumed mean.

15. The mean of a frequency distribution with 5 classes is calculated using an assumed mean A = 45. If Σfd = -120 and Σf = 80, what is the actual mean of the distribution?
