Term

Foundation Level (Fail → Pass)
Explain the difference between an angle of elevation and an angle of depression. Draw a simple diagram for each.
A scale for a drawing is 1 cm : 5 m. If a line on the drawing is 4 cm long, what is the actual length?
What is the first step you should always take before starting an accurate scale drawing?
The angle of depression from a tower to a car is 30°. What is the angle of elevation from the car to the tower?
A tree is 10m tall. If you use a scale of 1 cm : 2 m, how tall will the tree be in your drawing?
Intermediate Level (Pass → Credit)
6. Create a study guide outlining the 5-step method for solving scale diagram problems (Sketch, Scale, Construct, Measure, Convert).
7. From a point on the ground 20 m away from the foot of a vertical pole, the angle of elevation to the top of the pole is 35°. Using a suitable scale, draw a scale diagram and find the height of the pole.
8. From the top of a lighthouse 60 m high, a boat at sea is observed at an angle of depression of 45°. Find the distance from the boat to the foot of the lighthouse.
9. A man who is 1.5 m tall stands 10 m away from a flagpole. From his eye level, the angle of elevation to the top of the pole is 25°. Find the height of the flagpole.
10. A ladder leaning against a wall is 6m long and makes an angle of 60° with the ground. Find how high up the wall the ladder reaches.
Advanced Level (Credit → Distinction)
11. From a point A on the ground, the angle of elevation to the top of a tree is 30°. After walking 10 m closer to the tree to a point B, the angle of elevation becomes 40°. Find the height of the tree by drawing a scale diagram.
12. Give me a challenging problem involving two different angles of depression from the top of a building to two different points on the ground.
13. From the upper floor of a building 10m from a flagpole, an observer sees the top of the pole at an angle of elevation of 20° and the bottom of the pole at an angle of depression of 50°. Find the height of the flagpole.
14. A person on a ship sailing parallel to a straight coastline observes a lighthouse. At one point, the angle between the ship's path and the lighthouse is 30°. After sailing for 2 km, the angle is 70°. Find the shortest distance from the ship to the lighthouse.
15. From the top of a hill, the angles of depression of two consecutive kilometre stones on a straight horizontal road are 25° and 40°. Find the height of the hill.
